Koh Tao, Thailand Day 51

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

We have decided we need to move as our little place is a bit too quiet. We hopped on our scooters and checked out a few other bungalows. We decided on Blue Wind Resort on Sairee Beach I had read up on this one and we spotted it last night on our stroll along the beach. We paid for one night and will move in tomorrow.

We went for a drive and followed the concrete road to the north until it stopped and at the end we found an oasis. A beautiful resort set on the side of the hill, weaving you through massive granite boulders down to the water, the boulders are found everywhere on the island. We walked down to the water and went for a swim.

We headed back into Sairee and had some lunch at a Bakery….very disappointing. We dropped my bike back as we really don’t need two. Then we hunted out an internet cafe so we could chat to my dad and Ethan to wish them a Happy Birthday.

Dinner was quite nice a beautiful spot down on the beach just down the hill form OK ll but on the opposite side of the island. Lee was itching for a massage so we stopped in at the resort just before ours they had closed the massage for the night but they brought a masseuse in for him. I went back to our bungalow and read for a while.

Hua Hin > Koh Tao, Thailand Day 50

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Well we have finally made it to the islands!!!

We left Hua Hin at 8.30am this morning and arrived in Koh Tao at 2.30pm not a bad trip, the water was very calm! Once again no idea of where to stay, so we are in the ‘Safety Stop Pub’ having some lunch and reading up on the island.

First decision we hired 2 scooters, the man was kind enough to mind our packs while we went in search of a bed for the night. It took a little bit of searching but we have settled on OK ll Bungalows, they are on the opposite side of the island overlooking a great little bay – Shark Bay. It was great fun trying to ride scooters with our packs strapped to our backs!! After we settled in we walked down to the rocks in front and went for a swim. Had dinner in-house then went for a hoon into town to check out the beach scene!! Wow there are so many funky little places right on the beach. They all have decks out the front with low tables and bean bags/pillows, funky. we will post some photos

On the way home we stopped at a supermarket to buy some water….bad idea!! We walked out with biscuits and cheese – real cheese….Mainland Cheese and some coke and tonic. We settled in on our little deck and savoured G&T’s and bickies and cheese.

Hua Hin, Thailand Day 49

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

We didn’t do a lot today, Hua Hin just doesn’t seem to gel with us….too many tourists. We hung out, had a drink at a little place perched on the edge of the rocks and walked I don’t know how many laps of our little area. It got to the point that all the tailor shop guys saw us coming and left us alone. We did throw in a little treat and had a Thai foot massage…very good. In the evening we booked a bus/boat for tomorrow at 8.30am to get us to Koh Tao and checked out the night market.

Cha-am > Hua Hin, Thailand Day 48

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

My first hangover for the trip and if I have my way the last! Its just not good when you feel like this in this heat and you have to pack and move to your next location!!! Luckily Hua Hin was only 30kms down the road. Once again we had not organised anything so we asked our taxi truck to drop us at the beach. He dropped us outside the Sofitel and the beach was nowhere to be seen, we later found out we had to walk down the road a bit further through a head of street stalls and down a path to get to it.

Well what a difference to Cha-am, Hua Hin is full of European tourists and has all the big Resorts – Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Sofitel etc. so a bit more upmarket. First port of call McD’s for some hangover food and internet. We found a couple of places to check out, first one K Place. A bit more expensive than what we have been paying but when you are nursing a hangover and you have 20 odd kilo’s on your back it doesn’t make you want to shop around (very bad).

Well guess how we spent our afternoon…….sleeping!! We have aircon and nice crisp white sheets and a huge bed so it was very nice to snuggle down and snooze. When we finally woke we went for a walk to check out the beach. It wasn’t much, most of the beach near us was taken up by the Hotels so public bathing was restricted to certain areas. We picked one of the seafood restaurants for dinner most of them hang out over the water, they look as though they have each been built on big long piers. WHAT A MEAL!! We ordered a whole steamed fish in lime & garlic – it came out on its own little steam boat, prawns in a red curry soufflé – came out in a coconut shell and some Morning Glory (a Thai green vegetable it looks similar to baby bok choy). The fish was amazing it was actually covered in roughly chopped garlic, Lee and I looked at each other and said ‘we are going to stink tomorrow’ but surprisingly it was not that strong.

Cha-am, Thailand Day 47

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Had and interesting breakfast, Lee asked for 2 bottles of water and we received 2 bottles of coke, great kick start for the morning. After brekkie we settled into our position for the day. We had 2 deckchairs and about 6 umbrellas to ourselves. We read, swam, ate and drank till late in the arvo. We became a bit of hit when we went for a swim, we had this group of Thai kids wanting to play. They are really shy when it comes to speaking English so what usually happens is they will smile at you and then when you have gone past them they will turn away from you and say Hello. So Lee and I would turn back around and start asking them what their name was etc. they would giggle and think it was so much fun.

After a shower we headed out to find somewhere to have dinner. After walking from one end of the strip to the other we settled on a bar/restaurant that had a live band, they were pretty good for a Thai band. We sat next to a table with 2 Thai police (we think they were cops they had official uniforms on) they were drinking Pipers 100 sets. A set is a bottle of alcohol, cokes and sodas this is a regular scene at any restaurant/eatery, the Thais seem to love them. They ended up getting friendly with the Johnny Walker promo girl so she sat with them playing drinking games. Every now and then the younger of the 2 guys would get a bad roll of the dice so one of the waitresses would take his scull for him (they were not doing shots wither they would scull a whole glass as punishment).

We ended up drinking 2 x small Sang Som sets and found our trip home took a little longer than it should have. We did stop for Pancakes, a version of Indian Roti with Banana, choc sauce & condensed milk – rather yummy!!
