Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Day 23

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Lined up at 9.30am for our Visa – we can get 90 days for free (they are running a promotion!!!) We have to come back tomorrow and pick them up so we will have another trip out here, we definitely know our way around.

We went back to KLCC for lunch, I wasn’t feeling too well but had the best Chicken Soup – just what I needed. Tried to find a Pashmina as Lee wanted to go to the movies again and I think the freezing conditions in their yesterday have made me feel lousy today. I couldn’t find one but we went anyway and watched ‘Taken.

We had had enough of KLCC food so we headed back into Chinatown for dinner. We explored all the little alleyways and tried a few different things off the food stalls.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Day 22

Business day today we need to get our last rabies shot and see about our visa for Thailand.

We ended up hopping on the train again & going back to KLCC for our shots, it had a very good medical centre we spotted yesterday.

From there we caught another train and found our way to the Thai Consulate. We missed the times for applying so we will have to come back tomorrow morning. We were a bit deflated and didn’t know what to do so we went back to KLCC and watched a movie ‘The International’ and had dinner in the food court which is fantastic – heaps of local food.

Came home with a tickle in my throat the cinema was freezing….doesn’t feel good!!!

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Day 21

We finally became tourists today and checked out ‘Petronas Towers’ we didn’t go up just took some photos from the ground and spent a few hours in the shopping centre (KLCC) below it trying to find a pair of shoes to put my orthotics in. The shopping centre was amazing – think of any top end label and you are bound to find it in here Cartier, Rolex, Armani and one of the biggest book stores we have ever seen.

From here we checked out another shopping centre (retail therapy without even going into any shops). This place was huge ‘Berjaya Times Square’ it even has its own indoor amusement park with quite a good looking roller coaster so the kids can be dropped off and mum can shop to her hearts content! Great idea.

After all that retail therapy we decided to check out Chinatowns night market. This just helped us get seasoned for Thailand as every stall holder wanted to be our friend. We sat and a had a beer but no dinner as they place was just aimed at tourists so eating was average. Instead we headed back down near Central Market and had Roti at a great Indian restaurant/stall.

8 hours of walking we are absolutely buggered but my foot held out in my new runners!

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Day 20

First place to explore ‘Pudu Market’ the largest wet market in KL. It was chaotic locals everywhere buying their daily supply of fresh meat, fruit & vegies – we were the only whities! The place had every bit of fresh produce imaginable – all your fruit & veg, open air butchers selling chicken, pork, beef etc. and loads of fresh fish. They would chop up anything to your liking, even a few frogs here and there. The Malaysian men were amazed at Lee’s mo and would stop him & gesture that it was good!!! They must be crazy!!

At the entrance they had all the aquarium stalls selling all sorts of fish (they were just sitting in buckets with air being pumped in). There spotted a place to eat on the corner that looked really busy so we stopped in there for brekkie – Chicken & Duck with Rice. One of the guys on the stall had worked in the UK so his english was excellent and he couldn’t believe this was our first port of call in KL. We walked around a bit more exploring the area before hopping back on the train and heading back to the Guest House.

In the arvo we headed out to Kampung Baru where there was supposed to be some traditional Malay houses (we didn’t see any good ones I think they have all be torn down in the name of progress). Not to worry we still had the night market called ‘The Sunday Market’ (yes I know its Saturday – they call it this because it goes into the early hours of Sunday).

We had dinner in the market, some awesome satays served in brown paper and a banana leaf and we sampled some deep fried chicken. We had to sample the chicken as they had a huge mound of it on a table that they had battered, a massive wok of hot oil and a line up of locals waiting for the first pieces to be cooked……add it up….it must be good!!!

Mersing > Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Day 19

Caught the 10am bus to KL – 6hrs. The trip was pretty boring nothing much to see except palm plantations so it could easily be done at night!

Arrived in KL to a BIG thunder storm, bucketing down with rain, streets flooded. The bus driver wanted us to get out 100m away from the station as buses were banked back down the street due to the rain but the locals said no way!! So we sat in the bus for about 30mins until he could get into the underground terminal.

Lee went for a bit of a walk to find some accommodation, because as per usual we have not looked into anything. We don’t even know where we are in KL to find it on the map!!!!! Anyway by the time he came back I had figured out (with the help of a local girl) where we were & maybe were to stay.

We found our way to ‘Casavilla’ not far from the Puduraya Bus Station. Great place big wide open foyer area, couple of pool tables, TV, couches, free internet what more could you ask for…. oh clean & tidy!!

I did a bit more research and found somewhere to eat – ‘Central Market’ so we headed off in the general direction. We eventually found our way a few wrong turns here and there & we flagged down some locals for directions. Then we found out we were standing about 30m away from it…..doh!

All good – we have found our feet in KL & when the sun goes down it is an amazingly chaotic city. We are situated between ‘Little India’ & ‘Chinatown’ I think more ‘Little India’ most of Casavilla’s guests are Indian and there is a temple just down on the corner brimming with them every day!
